"poor" really is just a relative term; it does not mean anything by itself, it only means something when compared to another object. For example: If a person has 2 dollars and someone else has 5 dollars, the person with 2 dollars is poor and the person with 5 dollars is rich. That is how we determine rich or poor- although there are other factors in the real world such as ability to get essential items- food, clothing, water, shelter, education. But there is always a hierarchy- someone will also be worth "less"- be poorer than someone else. For example if someone had 1 million dollars, and someone else had 500 million dollars, the person with 1 million dollars would be considered poor.
Well what if everyone was worth 1 million dollars? Wouldnt that be much better?
Yes and no. Everyone would have the same amount of money, and therefore would be able to afford the same essential items- food, clothing, water, shelter.
The problem with this is that people are not worth the same amount of money. For example- a rocket scientist has put more time and effort into educating her or himself than a waitress. Should they get paid the same? If your answer is yes, then why would you bother to become a rocket scientist? Why wouldn't you simply become a waitress? Wouldn't that be easier?
The truth is, many people would choose to become a waitress, or some other job that does not require much effort. Society would not have as many people trying to expand knowledge, because there would be little to no incentive to do that.
I do agree that every person should have the ability to prove themselves. Every person should have the right to a good education. However, it is up to every person to make the best out of their situation. I can help someone by tutoring them, but I cannot force them to study. That is their own choice.
Given an education and some opportunites, each person must decide for themselves whether or not to be poor. Whether to use their opportunites or to squander their chances.
I think the real question should be not how to completely eradicate poverty because there will always be inequalities between people, but to find out how to give every person education and some opportunities.
People are poor. . .either because they didn't or couldn't try to work hard enough to earn enough for a living. Or because they were born in poor families. It isn't fair, but nobody can choose to be rich before they're born. Life wouldn't be life if we were all living comfortably. It's the truth.
But because we all have the ability to help one another- to take some burden off eachother's shoulders. . . We can make a small difference.
You know I've realized that life is not fair. but i also know that nothing happens before its time and that the god that made you and me wants us to reach out to each other. also he knows why he allows some of us to grow up harder than others, but in time if we all press on in all our individual lives, we will become stronger people when we come out, and when we do we will come out with a song that no one ever heard.
I believe that poverty is something that will never be eradicated because as leigh has mentioned in the first comment above: "If a person has 2 dollars and someone else has 5 dollars, the person with 2 dollars is poor and the person with 5 dollars is rich." since we as human beings define poverty as who has less than the other, then poverty will continue to exist. the thing that we should worry about is can we get the basic necessities to all peoples around the globe. Those basics would include shelter, food, water, education, and clothing. we need to worry about getting "poor" people the adequate needs, but we cannot do it alone, we will most definitely need the cooperation and assistance of those in need. we cannot force anything to those that do not want the help, but to those "poor" people that are willing to work with us are those that will rise from the heart of darkness and into the light of a new day.
