Alicia helps others reflect on issues of peace, tolerance and nonviolence through her project "Peace Through Art," a series of free painting workshops focusing on the message of peace, as well as her newspaper project, "Good News," which focuses on describing positive experiences and role models. She travels to poor towns in Mexico, teaching them how to express their feelings and beliefs through the universal language of art. She then shares her experiences in "Good News," which is distributed in schools. Alicia has interviewed Nobel Peace Prize winners, peacemakers and influential leaders- including the Dalai Lama-and encourages others to write about their own positive experiences. She has participated in the International Child Art Festival in Washington, D.C. and the International Day of Peace at the United Nations. Alicia is currently planning a summit that will bring together influential leaders and community members to discuss peace.

Bubunur Alibaeva is an 18-year-old youth activist who believes that every  single person has the ability to make a difference by channeling his or her talents and passions into the greater good. One event that really impacted her was the death of her father, as he had always been her bastion of support and advice, and his death motivated her to start volunteering in her community so that she could leave her own mark of goodness in her life. She began as a youth reporter for the “Youth Media Center”, for which she wrote reports and articles on teen issues, and also worked with organizations like “EveryChild International” to conduct skill-building workshops for orphans from distant regions of Kyrgyzstan. Bubunar just experienced being an exchange student in the United States, during which time  she harnessed her service abilities by organizing activities for the elderly homes, and thereby winning a grant from “American Bar Association” to raise awareness about teen curfews. As a result of her efforts, she was awarded the “Young Ambassador’s Award” in 2008. Additional projects that she organized include Sharing the Joy, in which she worked with juveniles in the justice system from different parts of Kyrgyzstan to hold concerts, soccer games and some workshops to rehabilitate the youth back into society.

Josephine

Josephine's picture

A young mother herself, Josephine's "NJAA MARUFUKU PROJECT" ("eradicating hunger" in Swahili) works to help young mothers and other less fortunate girls-the uneducated, those with disabilities, commercial sex workers or young women infected with HIV/AIDS-generate income and improve their nutritional standards through entrepreneurial and agricultural skills. Josephine and other young mothers raise  chickens for eggs and cultivate vegetables, receiving free vegetables and five eggs each week. The remaining food is sold at market. She also leads young mothers in “Bead  Work  Project” that helps raise their economic standards by weaving baskets, belts, bracelets and other such items. The generated income from both initiatives is divided among the girls. This project has successfully improved the nutritional and economic standards of the participating teenage mothers and their children. She hopes to expand her project to empower even more adolescent girls socially and economically so they can make informed decisions and be independent. Josephine wants to be an international advocate for women and children's rights, as well as a voice for the world's marginalized citizens.

Hey! I'm Laura, and I'm currently residing in New Orleans (Nawlins), LA. When I was about 16 I started a nonprofit called Wild and Water Swimming. WW uses the sport of swimming as a medium for combating poverty in the Southeastern US (and hopefully soon, the whole US!). Our primary service is providing free swimming lessons to low-income children. So far, we've taught 150 kids to swim and have raised over $40,000 for our programming. We also have a citizenship awards program and soon, a swim instructor training program for our grads. All swim lesson grads are given funding to swim on competitive swim teams for free.

What's my second favorite thing to running Wild and Water Swimming? Helping other kids change the world, too! If you have an idea and want advice, or have advice for me, let me know!

The main objective of Mahishka’s "Learn and Lead" project is to encourage the attitudinal change and personality development of children coming from conflict and poverty-stricken districts of Sri Lanka in order to produce a community of youth leaders. The program carries out this objective by bringing in scholars from impoverished communities to attend three of the top private schools in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Mahishka also conducts a child-mentoring program, which utilizes prominent experts in leadership to train high school students in child and youth empowerment. The training focuses on modern values of democracy and peaceful coexistence, and emph asizes the importance of being change agents in one’s community.
